Universe 6174 continues their exploration of low-lifes and long cons with Zanzibar Static, a record that finds Walter's world a little more tired, a little more tangled, and no less crooked. "Cold Room Deal" and "Little Mister Fine Print" keep the grift alive with the same unhurried swagger, while "The Vanishing Point" and "The Vellum Room" drift further into the haze, songs about men who've started believing their own paperwork. "The Also-Rans" and "The Sub-Committee" round out a cast of characters who never quite made the cut, propped up by the same warm keys and clipped horn hits that built the band's sound from the start.
Critics at the time called it minor work, more echo than evolution, but revisit it now and the familiarity plays less like fatigue and more like a band continuing the story it set out to tell. Not a reinvention. A last round for everyone still owed money.
